Those who apply for a scholarship to study in Germany have a choice: There are numerous providers of scholarships that enable international students to stay at German universities. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the world’s largest organization for the promotion of academic exchange. He also lists many other providers in his scholarship database.
The DAAD scholarships
The DAAD supports foreign students, graduates, doctoral candidates and young researchers who are at least in the top third of their year with their performance. In addition, those who are willing to take on social responsibility can score points in the selection process. Through its worldwide network with branch offices and information centers and at educational fairs, the DAAD advises international students in their home region.
Scholarships from the organizations promoting the gifted
In Germany there are 13 large organizations for the promotion of talented students that support students financially. Party-affiliated foundations such as the Friedrich-Ebert- or the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung count as well as church scholarship providers or the Foundation of German Business. All 13 funding agencies place value on “non-material funding”: Through seminars, workshops or independent projects, the scholarship holders can contribute their ideas beyond the limits of their studies – and thus establish valuable networks. Of course, numerous other, smaller foundations also offer scholarships. Likewise, the German universities, most of which also offer the Germany Scholarship.
The Germany Scholarship
The Deutschlandstipendium supports students and newcomers whose career means that outstanding achievements in their studies and work can be expected. Around eight percent of the scholarships are made available to foreign applicants. The universities choose from the applications; the federal government and private sponsors jointly finance the scholarship.
